When she release Fortress Round My Heart three years ago, Ida Maria immediately became recognized as much-needed breath of fresh air in rock’s male-dominated world. By taking old rock cliches and turning them on their head (the playful “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked”) while showing equal parts heart and grit. This is a sound she continues with the release of her latest, Katla, which sees release today. To celebrate the album’s release, Ida Maria shared her 15 favorite tracks at the moment for an exclusive MOG playlist, including tracks by Best Coast, Nas, and many more. Ida Maria Says: “Jay Reatard was a great songwriter. Too bad he passed away before I got to shake hands and heads with him. He is equally optimistic and pessimistic in his lyrics, and I’m a big fan of contrasts.”
2. Nas & Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley – “As We Enter”
Ida Maria Says: “First hip hop album I ever bought was Nas – I Am… I started wearing baggy jeans to school and tried to convince everybody this was the only music worth listening too… I didn’t manage to convince anybody… After all there is no ghetto in north of Norway…”
3. Dungen – “Det Du Tänker Idag Är Du I Morgon”
Ida Maria Says: “Intro in this song just makes me smile… I listened to this song today when I walked down from the mountain where I live, and after all that hard walking, it was really nice to hear that piano, like raindrops. One of my fav bands.”
4. Peaches – “I Feel Cream”
Ida Maria Says: “I think Peaches just decided that the guys need some compliments too! Right on, I am def down with that, just check out my fresh album Katla… It’s at least three songs there completely celebrating the man. What!”
5. Amy Winehouse – “Tears Dry on Their Own”
Ida Maria Says: “Amy oh Amy how I prayed that she would make it through that hurricane. I can flatter myself to say I’ve seen her live, for me it was like seeing Jimi Hendrix. Oh My God. I get easily starstruck…She is so damn cool. I love her. What can I say. ”
6. Feist – “Let It Die”
Ida Maria Says: “This one is so jumpy and fun, and so cleverly produced with all those loops on the guitar and stuff, i wanna try that out why havent I done that yet. I love that line: ‘may be years until that day my dreams will match up with my pay.’ I hear you Feist, I want an avenue…”
7. Best Coast – “Our Deal”
Ida Maria Says: “I just recently discovered her and I realize I listen to her all the time! This might be my favourite. Turn that reverb up!!!”
8. The Breeders – “Happiness Is a Warm Gun”
Ida Maria Says: “This song just popped into my head the other day. Love it.”
9. Wavves – “No Hope Kids”
Ida Maria Says: “Best Coast + Wavves = LUV!!!! Hahaha I discovered Wavves first. Love their sound, songs, my fav is def ‘Post Acid’ but I’ve told everyone about that song a thousand times so I’ll take ‘No Hope Kids’ for a change.”
10. Belle & Sebastian – “Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying”
Ida Maria Says: “Another one of those songs I completely forgot and then it just pops into my head while I’m doing the dishes (yeah my dishwasher broke a month ago but I actually just fixed it completely with the help of my never ending optimism and a screwdriver, as in the drink containing orange juice and vodka).”
11. M.I.A. – “It Takes a Muscle”
Ida Maria Says: “Love this one. I think the muscle she´s talking about is the heart.”
12. Dark Dark Dark – “In Your Dreams”
“Recent discovery, very very very nice music to listen to if you’re feeling like taking a walk down the melancholia road.”
13. Dungen – “Panda”
Ida Maria Says: “Another great Dungen song, probably their most known. They sing in Swedish but believe me even though I understand the language, their lyrics are pretty, what can I say, high flying. But I would love to try and translate for you if we happen to end up in the same party listening to Dungen in the future.”
14. Trey Songz feat. Nicki Minaj– “Bottoms Up”
Ida Maria Says: “My friend Becky works with Trey (lucky Becky!) and she introduced me to him.. I really think the lyrics are so incredibly deep and poetic. Haha naaa… It´s sexy. Nicki Minaj is cool.”
15. Those Darlins – “Let’s Talk Dirty In Hawaiian”
Ida Maria Says: “This one is just hilarious!! I wanna tour with you guys, you hear me!!! Let´s talk dirty in Hawaiian!!”
